Institute for jewellery design

Jewellery designing is no longer an exclusive tradition, passed on through generations. The day when a craftsperson used to inherit techniques and skills from his forefathers, which he perfected to give Indian jewellery a uniqueness is all gone. With tough competition and increasing demand for jewellery in the international market and a change in the aesthetic sense of the customers, the need was felt for enhancement of manufacturing techniques to keep pace with contemporary design skills.
Thus was conceptualised the Jewellery Design and Technology Institute with the objective of imparting a high level of education and training to students, thereby enhancing the product quality of India jewellery and expanding its reach in the domestic as well as international markets.
Situated in Noida -- an important commercial centre close to Delhi -- the Institute will start its first academic session in April. A Division of Silver Smith India, the Institute is supported by the World Gold Council, an international non-profit organisation involved in promotional activities to increase gold consumption.
"We firmly believe that if you can't make jewellery, you can't design either. All ideas require the appropriate means for their ealisation. With this underlying concept, the JDTI promises to give its aspirants the right tools in theory and practice to translate their ideas into reality." says Mr. C.K.Bhandari, general manager, Silver Smith India Ltd. who has been associated with the Institute from the beginning. The courses offered are both of long and short-term duration. The long-term courses include a three-month Jewellery and Technology Foundation, Jewellery and Technology Diplom, of six months and one-year duration and a two-year course in Jewellery Design and Technology Career.
The short-term courses are in Jewellery Designing, Gold Smithing, Casting Technology, Wax Modelling and Mould making, Finishing, Polishing and Repairing,
Stone setting, Enamelling, Electroplating and Electroforming. Gemmology, Market Research, Presentation and Sales Aesthetics, Business Studies and Export Documentation and Factory and Store Surveillance.
The courses are open for those who wish to make a career, women enterpreneurs and housewives interested in starting their own business, craftpersons of various disciplines in the industry, jewellers and their family members. Registration for the courses has begun from Febuary 10 and would continue until March 25. The first class would be held on April 5. The fee varies from course to course with Rs. 7,500 for the basic and Rs. 2 lakh for the two-year course. To begin with two classes of 20 students each will be held which would be expanded gradually.
